It’s nearly time to say goodbye to 2017, but as with every late December, Flickr collects all its data from the previous 12 months and shares it with the world. This is not only really interesting, but it also serves to give photographers an insight into which direction the market is shifting.
Some of the stats may surprise you, others may shock you, so gets get started…
Stat one: 50% of all images uploaded to Flickr in 2017 were captured with a Smartphone, making it the most popular camera device by far. DSLRs trailed behind in second with 33% of the pie, while point & shoot camera were responsible for 12% and mirrorless cameras making up 4%. This stat confirms that investment from smartphone manufacturers to increase the megapixels, features and overall quality of the cameras in their devices seems to be paying off and the public are more confident to not only capture, but also share, an image taken with a smartphone rather than a purpose-built camera like a DSLR.
Stat two: Apple is hogging the Flickr pie and by a fair old way too. Of the ten most frequently used devices to capture images that were uploaded on Flickr during 2017, nine out of ten were an Apple smartphone. The iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 5s were the most popular iPhone cameras respectively. So, although some amazing alternatives like Google’s Pixel 2 and Huawei’s Mate (which features a f/1. 6 lens and 20-MP sensor), the Apple iPhones are still leading the way.
Stat three: So, along with all the Apple iPhones, one DSLR made it into the Top 10 mix - can you guess what it is? Well, the most popular DSLR was in fact. . . . the Canon 5D MkIII. While it’s not the newest model in the legendary 5D line-up, (the MkIV currently holds this title) the 5D MkIII’s 22. 3-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, robust weather-proof build and impressive image quality have certainly won over photographers.
Stat four: With the Canon 5D MkIII coming out as top DSLR, what do the stats say about the on-going battle between Canon and Nikon in the fight to be the biggest brand in photography. Well, after Apple, Canon was the second-largest brand used by image-makers on Flickr and was responsible for 23% of the top 100 devices. Nikon was the third most popular brand of 2017, with 18%. So, Canon still seems to rule the roost between the big two, but could Sony make a dent in 2018 thanks to the awesome cameras it’s launched, such as the a9 and 42-megapixel a7RIII?
Time will tell, but in the meanwhile, why not check out the awesome photography from Flickr’s top 25 images of 2017 by clicking here.
