Getty Images’ Female Sports Photographer Internship Seeking Entries

Getty Images has announced a new initiative to promote gender diversity within the professional sports photography community. The female sports photographer internship programme will allow one selected female applicant to train under some of the world’s best sports photographers and editorial teams.

Unlike many of the more eye-roll inducing unpaid coffee-fetch slavedrives common to the creative industries, it actually looks like becoming Getty’s chosen intern will be a dream job for an up and comer. The winning entrant will be placed in a salaried position at Getty Images’ London office for a year starting July 2017 and as part of that role they’ll learn the real nuts and bolts of sports photography. Rather than making copies and lattes, they’ll be working alongside the picture desk, assignments team, and field editors. They’ll also get to actually practice their shooting skills at sports events.

Getty Images’ Vice President of Global Sport and Entertainment, Ken Mainardis said of the internship, “We are passionate about supporting photographic talent and excited to be offering an up-and-coming female photographer with a passion for sports the chance to learn from the world’s best. ”

This internship follows one of several grants and schemes that Getty have launched within the last few years to educate and provide experience to budding visual creatives. The programme is being run in partnership with Women’s Sport Trust, Cerno Capital and Canon. The idea being to increase the visibility of both female athletes and women working in sports image production.

Hopefuls for the gig need to send along the standard CV and cover letter as well as a collection of their 15 best photos by 31 March 2017. That means there’s still time to get down to your local sports ground and capture some tackles. It’s such a great opportunity that we’re just a bit sad there's only giving away one slot!
