GoPro has been teasing us for weeks about its new Karma drone, flying it around a forest and inside a library before making moves earlier today with its suggestive-filled holding page – but all of that has now come to an end with the model’s official confirmation.

Teased under the slogan “It All Gets Easy” the Karma was unveiled as a complete system: aerial, handheld and mountable, and designed to be as portable as possible.

The unit folds into itself for compactness, while the stabiliser has not only been moved up to the front of the unit but designed to be removeable so that you can attach it to a separate grip for handheld shooting. This grip itself also features physical controls, so you can control the camera’s functionality directly from it.

The Karma controller, meanwhile, boasts a super bright display and, among other things, works in tandem with a new Passenger app, which allows a friend to see what’s being recorded on their smartphone without needing to control the unit itself.

Nick Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro, took to the stage at a launch event in California, announcing that the company had shifted over 20million GoPro models since the company’s launch. Citing a focus on helping the user not just capture stories but sharing and editing the effortlessly too, he went on to introduce the Hero 5 Black, billed as the most powerful GoPro yet.

The GoPro 5 Black is waterproof without a housing down to a depth of 30feet, with a 2” touchscreen on the back and a GUI that’s been redesigned for simplicity. 4K video at 30fps is on board along with the option of capturing 12MP photos, while video stabilisation helps to keep everything silky.

The model also finds space for a GPS system and is capable of recording stereo sound, but does this with three microphones instead of two. Why’s that? GoPro reckons that by recording things in triplicate, it can cherry pick the best audio and combine it into a higher-quality stereo track than would otherwise be the case.

The model is also designed with Voice Control – so, you can tell it to take a photo or start and stop video recording, for example, in seven different languages. Furthermore, when plugged in to charge, the camera can wirelessly upload the contents of its card to an also-unveiled, cloud-based GoPro Plus account.

GoPro has also revamped its Session line with the Hero 5 Session. This also totes 4K video and the same Voice Control feature as its launch partner, together with 10MP image capture and the promise of “enhanced” low-light shooting. It’s also waterproof out of the box and is a “cockroach, incredibly hard to kill” – a claim that, intentionally or not, will no doubt be validated in due course.

Woodman also took today as an opportunity to unveil the Quik Key, a phone-compatible SD card reader, which allows you to move footage from your camera to your phone with a view to instantly edit it. Through the compatible Quik app, you can edit your creations, select music, adjust its length and apply a filter for effect.

The Hero 5 Session will retail at US$299 while the Hero 5 Black will have a US$399 asking price. The new models are also compatible with the Karma, which itself will retail at US$799, and everything is set to be available from October 2.
