Panasonic Unleashes Lumix FZ2000 Superzoom

Superzoom fans may have spent the last few years preoccupied with Sony’s successful and steadily growing RX10 line of superzoom cameras, but Panasonic has followed up on its original FZ1000 model with something they hope will distract them.

The Lumix FZ2000/FZ2500 carries over the same 1in, 20. 1MP BSI CMOS sensor from its predecessor, but it marries this with a newly developed Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 24-480mm f/2. 8-4. 5 optic – both longer and wider than before.

4K video, which has even been made available in both UHD 4K and DCI 4K flavours, also features, recording at 30/24p at 100Mbps. Those not needing 4K can also record at up to 60p when shooting in Full HD at 200Mbps, with a choice of MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD formats. Furthermore, with both headphone and microphone ports, 10bit 4:2:2 output over HDMI and, for an additional charge, the option to have V-Log support, it’s clear the Panasonic imagines the target user will be taking video very seriously.

As we’d expect in a 4K-toting Lumix model, the above has been augmented with a good helping of 4K-related technologies, such as 4K PHOTO and Post Focus, as well as the new Focus Stacking feature that has also featured in the company’s other Photokina announcements.

The new model also gains a handful of upgraded features of the FZ1000, including and an ND filter that can have its strength adjusted over a -2-6EV range (or left to an Auto setting), while a more stable zooming mechanism is said to account for 80% less image shifting than the FZ1000.

Around the back there’s an OLED electronic viewfinder with a 2. 36million-dot resolution and 0. 74x magnification, just slight higher than the 0. 70x magnification on the FZ1000. Likewise, a 3in, free-angle screen touchscreen beneath it appears to have also been carried over, altough its resolution has (slightly) increased to from 921k dots to 1. 04million dots.

Other features of note include Panasonic’s contrast-detect Depth from Defocus AF system, together with 12fps burst shooting and Wi-Fi, although curiously, NFC, which was included in the FZ1000, seems to have disappeared. Those reading the spec sheet closely will also notice the model is a touch larger than the FZ1000 and around 130g heavier than before.

The model is set to be available in November.
