Pixar Animators Created This Incredible Short In Their Spare Time

Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj must both be pretty busy guys, working full-time for Pixar, but the pair have dedicated weekends and evenings over the past five years creating Borrowed Time, an incredibly moving short film that is now available on Vimeo.

As the filmmakers explain in a short featurette about the making of Borrowed Time, the aim of the project was to show that animation could tackle grittier, more adult themes than Toy Story and other Pixar features might have you believe. “We really wanted to make something that was a little bit more adult in the thematic choices and show that animation could be a medium to tell any kind of story,” explains Hamou-Lhadj.

The story concerns the relationship between a Sheriff of the Old West and his young son, and deals with the themes of loss, regret and forgiveness. Borrowed Time is as polished and professional as anything that’s been produced by Pixar in recent years, and is entirely immersive and captivating throughout its almost seven minute runtime. It has picked up countless awards at short film festivals already, and is likely to continue doing so as it competes around the globe.

If you have a few minutes to spare, you should definitely check it out. Let us know what you think in the comments below or on Facebook.
