Short Film Provides a Dizzying Feast of Shanghai Culture

Filmmaker JT Singh, takes us on a whirlwind tour around Shanghai, a densely populated city home to millions. Using a series of cleverly masked transitions Shanghai Forever provides a frenetic sense of pace needed to highlight the hustle and bustle of its people.

Speaking with PetaPixel, Singh explains that he wanted to focus on the feeling of exploring a city, “micro moments that make you suddenly smile or see something so interesting the you keep staring. ”

The illusion of fluid motion was thoroughly mapped out in great detail using transitional storyboarding. “I’ve never been a fan of videos that just cut to different scenes without any connective tissues,” Singh says. “For this video I think I tried to push it with creative transitions. ”

The final video evokes the charm of Brandon Li’s Hong Kong Strong and Vincent Urban’s Japan tour for its stylistic use of film editing. An approach that is fast becoming synonymous with videos that traverse big cities in a span of minutes.
