Back in March, Sigma issued a notice on its website informing customers of a potential issue with select units of its 28–70mm F2. 8 DG DN lens for Sony E mount and L mount camera systems. Now, Sigma has shared a follow-up notice, confirming it has addressed the issue and will replace affected units, free of charge.

In the initial notice, Sigma said it had ‘become aware of a potential issue with [its] recently released SIGMA 28–70 F2. 8 DG DN | Contemporary, which could lead to increased ghosting over time in certain shooting conditions. ’ Considering how new the lens was at the time and how early Sigma detected the issue, few lenses were believed to be affected, but Sigma apologized for the inconvenience, noted this issue ‘falls short of our usual high standards’ and said it was 'acting as quickly as possible to rectify the issue.

Now, Sigma has posted a follow-up noticed, confirming the range of serial numbers it believes are affected by the issue and has assured customers it ‘would like to collect all the products with the target serial number and replace them with new ones. ’

Sigma says lenses with serial numbers prior to 55488834 are the only units believed to be affected. As shown in the illustration above, the serial number on the lens can either be found on the body of the lens, between the focus and zoom ring, or on the box, just below the smaller, wider barcode.

Sigma requests anyone with a lens within the serial number range contact their local authorized Sigma service center using its dedicated webpage to get the unit replaced. You can read our field review of the Sigma using the link below:
