Sony has announced a new compact digital shotgun microphone, the ECM-B10. This new multidirectional microphone has three pickup patterns and transmits data digitally through Sony’s Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe on its compatible mirrorless camera systems, negating the need for extra cables and batteries.
This compact microphone measures just 7. 9cm (3. 1”) long, 8. 3cm (3. 3”) tall and weighs just 74g (2. 6oz). It includes three built-in pickup patterns - omnidirectional, cardioid and hypercardioid - that can be changed on-the-fly with a three-way switch. Other buttons on the back include an analog/digital switch, a noise filter switch (Off, Low Cut and Noise Cut), an attenuation switch (0dB, 10dB and 20dB), an audio level wheel and a toggle for switching between Auto and Manual capture modes.
When using the ECM-B10 with a Sony mirrorless camera with an MI Shoe, the microphone will convert the analog signal to digital in the microphone before sending it to the camera through the MI shoe. Sony says this technology uses ‘proprietary algorithms [to] enable noise reduction as well as directivity. ’ The MI interface also provides all the power needed for the microphone, meaning no separate batteries need to be charged and stored when used on compatible cameras.
The Sony ECM-B10 is available to pre-order starting today for $250. the first units are expected to ship in early August 2022. In addition to the microphone, the kit includes a soft pouch, a windscreen and an MI Shoe cover.
