Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that desktop Macs are coming in a private employee message board posting leaked to TechCrunch earlier today. Speculation over the lagging release schedule for desktops coupled with the recent MacBook Pro refresh suggested that Apple might be leaving the desktop market behind to double down on the mobile computing trend.
Much to the joy of desktop Apple users, this no longer seems to be the case.
“The desktop is very strategic for us. It’s unique compared to the notebook because you can pack a lot more performance in a desktop. ”
Reading between the lines: the Mac Pro is very likely dead. To Tim Cook, the iMac is the desktop, period. https://t. co/yaVj0aPvrn pic. twitter. com/gWNDlY2tgL

Cook’s message to the employees is in response to the media raising questions over Apple’s commitment to desktops, “Nobody should worry about that,” he says. While the message is wholly positive, perhaps Apple didn’t want to the news to steal the attention away from the newly released Macbook Pro line — the first significant update in four years.
In any case, it would be wise for Apple to post an official response soon. Microsoft is currently gunning for the neglected desktop market with its Surface Studio all-in-one PC, which basically looks like what the latest desktop Mac would've been if it were launched alongside Macbook Pro.
