DJI shows off its Digital FPV System, a dedicated headset and remote with internal recording

DJI has officially entered the lucrative FPV market. However, it's not releasing an actual drone. Instead, the Chinese manufacturer, whose FCC filings for FPV components were unveiled last week, has introduced the DJI Digital FPV System.

It contains DJI FPV Goggles, the DJI FPV Air Unit Transmission Module, which attaches to the DJI FPV Camera, and a DJI FPV Remote Controller (RC).

The benefits of flying a traditional FPV system, which include increased speed and maneuverability, have been hampered by a compromised analog signal that generates poor video quality. DJI is now disrupting the growing FPV racing market by offering up its low latency transmission and superior camera technologies to remote pilots. The company hopes to enhance the overall experience of FPV piloting by offering sharp, detailed, clear HD imagery coupled with 28ms low-latency video transmission and a long distance range of four kilometers (roughly two-and-a-half miles).

‘As drone racing grows in popularity, FPV racers are looking for the next technology to keep up with their demands. The new DJI FPV System was designed using our vast experience creating aerial and ground transmission systems and offers technology truly unique to the market,’ said Ferdinand Wolf, DJI Europe’s Creative Director. ‘As the only digital video transmission solution on the market that performs at the same level as analog, even surpassing it in some aspects, we hope to set a new standard for digital FPV. ’

‘As the only digital video transmission solution on the market that performs at the same level as analog, even surpassing it in some aspects, we hope to set a new standard for digital FPV. ’

The four integrated components offer up a variety of features that will enhance the FPV experience for racers and audience members, alike. The DJI FPV Camera boasts a 2. 1 mm lens and can capture video at 1080p/60fps. The FPV Googles display video in HD resolution at a smooth 720p/120fps with a 4:3/16:9 aspect ratio. The DJI FPV Remote Controller connects with the DJI Air Unit Transmission Module for latency as low as 7ms.

A strong transmission system, embedded remote controller receiver, and multi-antenna technology, gives the DJI FPV Air Unit a competitive edge.

The entire system supports eight 5. 8GHz frequency channels, allowing up to eight pilots to race simultaneously. Audience Mode gives spectators the opportunity join in on the racing action as well with an uninterrupted video feed, even when the drone clips objects. Video recorded and saved on a micro SD card can be replayed instantly through the FPV Goggles.

DJI has focused a great deal of its efforts in the past few years on developing its camera technology. The DJI FPV camera boasts a 150° ultra-wide-angle lens providing operators with a wide field-of-view. Pilots can choose from three camera modes plus adjust screen brightness and saturation to obtain vivid imagery. These modes are:

LED Mode: LED Mode does exactly what its title says. It increases the saturation of the LED lights on a racing course while reducing image noise commonly found while flying at night.

Standard Mode: This is ideal for imagery captured during the day. It reduces color loss while preserving details.

Racing Mode: Once again, this mode lives up to its tile by helping pilots identify brightly colored objects and obstacles throughout a racing course.

Since DJI has not released a drone, it recommends purchasing the above accessories to complement its Digital FPV System.

The DJI Digital FPV System can be pre-ordered today and will ship out one business day after payment is confirmed. The FPV Experience Combo, which retails for $819, includes the FPV Googles, two Camera and Air Unit Transmission Models, plus wires and antennas. The Fly More Combo is $929, comes in two separate modes, and also includes the Remote Controller. Given how much effort is involved in building a reliable FPV unit, one can hope that DJI plans on a releasing a drone that integrates with this system in the near future.
