Laowa fisheye answers the call of the wide

Laowa has announced a fisheye lens with a far-reaching 210° angle of view for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 4mm f/2. 8 lens offers the equivalent to an 8mm fisheye on a full-frame camera and has the trademark bulbous front lens element to produce unique fisheye images, complete with maximum optical distortion.

The Laowa fisheye is remarkably small given its ultra wide field of view

The ultra wide angle of view makes it possible to create a 360° panorama image by combining just two frames, plus the 4mm f/2. 8 also has a wide range of other applications including astrophotography, drone work and even quirky portraits.

Drone footage shows how seriously wide the Laowa 4mm lens is!

Everything in focus

Optically, the 4mm f/2. 8 uses seven elements arranged in six groups and has a minimum aperture of f/16. That said, depth-of-field is so large in a lens like this, that Laowa claim that setting an aperture of f/5. 6 with the lens focused on infinity will ensure everything is in sharp focus!

Unlike other fisheye lenses, which tend to be bulky and bulbous, the Laowa optic measures just 45mm in length and weighs a mere 135g, so you can carry it with you wherever you go. A minimum focusing distance of just 8cm from the sensor also means you can get incredibly close to your main subject to create images with extreme levels of distortion.

The Laowa 4mm f/2. 8 is available now for around $199. Take a look at the sample images below to see what the lens is capable of:
