RED Helium 8K Achieves Highest Ever DxOMark Score of 108

RED are now the undisputed kings of DxOMark's contentious rating system, and their new 35. 4MP Helium 8K sensor has recently attained 108 points – the highest overall score ever. The RED Epic Dragon was the first sensor to score above 100 on the scale, and got 101 points.

Both the Dragon and Helium sensors are physically pretty similar, although the Helium packs more pixels at around 3. 65 microns each, which is roughly equivalent to APS-H in DSLR terms.

DxOMark calls the 8K Helium a 'solid upgrade' over the 6K Epic Dragon, with improved noise ratings, dynamic range, color depth, and ISO performance.

The 6K Epic Dragon had a DxOMark dynamic range rating of 14. 8 stops in reality, while the Helium now has a rating of 15. 2 stops. Both cameras however had an advertised dynamic range of 16. 5+ stops.

As the two RED cameras were prototypes when tested, they won't officially be added to the rank. But you can still compare them to other cameras such as Hasselblad's medium format models, Sony's full-frame mirrorless beasts, and the best from Pentax, Nikon, and Canon.
