After years of playing it safe with DSLRs, it looks like Canon might be finally ready to tackle the full-frame mirrorless market. Canon Watch are tipping the company to launch a new camera line with an EF mount that will enable pre-existing EF lenses to be used without an adapter.
The full-frame mirrorless is speculated to fit somewhere at the entry-level making it a spiritual successor to the popular EOS 6D.
Earlier in the year, Mr. Go Tokura of Canon's Image Communications Products Operation said he’d consider exploring a mirrorless full-frame future if an autofocus and electronic viewfinder comparable to EOS DSLRs were available.
It is unsure whether Canon has finally developed technology capable of fulfilling Tokura’s needs, if the success of EOS M5 is making them consider more mirrorless options, or if Canon are simply tired of seeing others dominate in the mirrorless market.
The rumour dovetails nicely with Canon’s patent of an 40-800mm f/4. 5 lens for full-frame DSLRs; however, being an EF lens it should also work nicely with a full-frame EF-mount mirrorless camera.
