Sharp isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think "high-end smartphones," but the Japanese's company's display technology is being used in quite a few devices from other brands, and Sharp tends to use its own products to showcase its latest developments.

This is the case for the Aquos S2, which was announced today and features a pretty stunning edge-to-edge 5. 5" panel with 17:9 aspect ratio, a 2,040 x 1,080 resolution, 135-percent sRGB gamut and 550-nit brightness.

Thanks to Sharp's display know-how, the Aquos S2 has an impressive 87. 5-percent screen-to-body ratio and essentially fits a 5. 5" display into the dimensions of a conventional 5" device. You still get a sizeable 3,030 mAh battery, though, and all the components are built into an aluminum uni-body design with a glass back.

A small cutout at the top of the display provides room for the 8MP front camera with large 1. 4um pixels and F2. 0 aperture. A dual-cam on the back combines a 12MP main sensor with a 8MP secondary chip which is mainly used for a 7-level depth-effect but doesn't provide any zoom capability. Both rear image sensors also feature 1. 4um pixels and fast F1. 75 apertures.

Sharp has not released any information on global availability yet, but the company is already taking pre-orders in China. The standard model is powered by a Snapdragon 630 chipset , 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and will set you back 2,500 yuan (approximately $370). The premium model is approximately $150 more expensive, but it'll get you a Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
