Sony’s semiconductor division has developed a tiny one megapixel sensor that — at only two millimeters — is said to be the smallest one megapixel sensor yet. At its resolution, the sensor won’t be useful for professional shoots but is instead more likely to propagate photography into wearable technology such as smartwatches.

Which would be either an awesome use scenario for candid photography or very creepy depending on how you look at it.

Digital Trends says the sensor will be able to capture images at about 1,296 pixels at the longest edge when used with a low-profile lens measuring 2. 6 millimeters.

On the whole, the camera lens, sensor, and circuit board weighs as little as a tenth of a gram. In addition, the module runs on a low power consumption of 8-55 mW.

The sensor is able to shoot up to 240fps by cutting image resolution down to 324 pixels; however, even at full resolution the device will still be able to capture video at 60fps.

Since Sony's chips and sensor technology are generally sold for wider industry use, we could see this tiny camera show up in the next iteration of Apple Watches, miniature drones, or perhaps as a low poweer consumption alternative to Snapchat Spectacles.
