14 Stunning Images to make you Love Drones Even More

Drone photography has well and truly hit its stride in 2018 and, as if to re-enforce this assertion, the images from the 2018 Drone Awards contest are stunning and sure to provide plenty of inspiration to budding drone photographers and professionals alike.

This year’s contest saw over 4,000 entries from 101 different countries, but the judges decided that Florian Ledoux’s image entitled ‘Above The Polar Bear’ was deserving of the top prize and ‘Photo of the Year’ title. The striking image shows the polar bear leaping from one mass of ice to another and the aerial angle gives the viewer a unique perspective.

Among the other commended images was Ovi D. Pop, for an image entitled ‘Weather Snake’, which cleverly fused two images of the same location shot during different seasons into one stunning aerial frame.

Highly Commended in the Abstract category went to Branko Markovic for this image entitled ‘Dendrites’.

Taking top honours in the Nature category was this jaw-dropping frame, entitled ‘Mada’in Saleh’ from Gabriel Scanu. Captured with a Mavic Air, the scene offers a fresh perspective of the famous archaeological site in Saudi Arabia.

Highly Commended in the Nature category went to Mieke Boynton, an Australian photographer, for her image entitled ‘Organic’, a stunning aerial image that shows the blueprint of nature.

Winner of the People category was Qinghua Shui for an image entitled ‘Pilgrimage of Millions of People’, which showcases the colour and detail that can be achieved from an aerial image.

Runner Up in the People category went to Xiaoxiao Liu for an image called ‘Honour’s Day’. The scene demonstrates excellent use of lines, patterns and shadows.

Vincent Riemersma claimed top spot in the Sport category for his image entitled ‘Skating Shadows’. The scene captures a skaters cutting through the ice with tall shadows catching the eye.

The Runner Up title in the Sport category was taken by Luis Alonso Jimenez Silva for an image entitled ‘El Angel’. The well timed image capture the moment a diver leaps off the top board and, thanks to the pose, it’s not hard to see where Luis go the title of the image.

The Sport category was one of the most hotly-contested fields in the awards and this image, entitled 'Basketball' was captured by Shihui Liu.

This haunting frame, entitled ‘Blacktip Shark’ was captured by Adam Barker and took top honours in the Wildlife category. The scene does a great job in demonstrating how useful drones can be, allowing photographers to capture scenes to dangerous to get close to.

Taking Runner Up spot in the Wildlife category was another image sure to send shivers down the spine. Captured by Dhritiman Mukherjee, the image is entitled ‘Responsible Daddy the Gharial with Babies’.

Claiming the winner spot in the Urban category was this image, entitled ‘Assisi Over The Clouds’, which was taken by Francesco Cattuto. The scene shows the Italian architectural wonder in a new way, with the chapel surrounded by cloud.

Lastly, this Runner Up image from the Urban category, shows how drones can be extremely useful for capturing events that would be otherwise dangerous to get close to. Entitled ‘Warehouse Fire’, the image was taken by Byron du Bois and shows a warehouse fire in Durban, South Africa.
