Apple have released a US$300 photo book dedicated to the design and innovation of its products over the past two decades. The book was developed over the past eight years and pays tribute to the memory of Steve Jobs who spearheaded the creative vision and thinking behind the company.
Designed by Apple in California recounts the second coming of Steve Jobs who returned to Apple and led the company back to profitability. The book features 450 images of Apple products shot by photographer Andrew Zuckerman.
The photographs, spanning the breadth of 1998’s iMac to 2015’s Apple Pencil, also feature accompanying materials and techniques Apple’s design team used when designing their innovative feats.
“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. The collection stands as a testimony to the synergy behind Apple’s vision as each product dovetails into another.
The linen-bound hardcover book comes printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges. It is available in both a large (13” x 16. 25”) and small size (10. 20” x 12. 75”) retailing for US$299 and US$199 respectively.
Ive says that says that “We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines. ”
While meant as a premium coffee-table book, Designed by Apple in California will more than likely be found sitting on the shelves of student libraries, or in the hands of Apple diehards looking for a quick fix before the iPhone 8 drops next year.
Thankfully for the rest of us, the book will be on display at the Apple Stores where it is sold.
