Canon’s long-awaited EOS 6D Mark II might be getting all the attention today, but the company has also refreshed the novice end of its DSLR spectrum with the EOS 200D. The EOS 200D serves as an update to the existing EOS 100D, and packs in plenty of tech inside a tiny body.
This includes upping the APS-C sensor from the 18MP chip inside the EOS 100D to a previously seen 24. 2MP sensor here, and also fitting the model with the very latest DIGIC 7 processing engine. Among other things, this allows for 5fps burst shooting and even post-capture Raw processing.
At just 390g with its battery and card in place, the camera is also the lightest Canon DSLR to date to be designed with a vari-angle screen. As with the EOS 100D this measures three inches in size and has a resolution of 1. 04million dots, although it’s now fully sensitive to touch, which should please the smartphone users at which it’s aimed.
To further entice this audience, Canon is making the camera available in different finishes. In addition to the traditional black version, the model will be available in a white finish (below, top) that’s similar to the Stella McCartney redesign of the EOS 100D, together with a silver/tan option (below, bottom).
Furthermore, the Guided UI feature that we’ve started to see pop up on other Canon models such as the EOS 800D is also present. With this, the user can better understand his or her camera’s settings and the effects of changing different parameters.
The EOS 200D can shoot Full HD video and has an intervalometer built into it for time-lapse footage, and you can also use Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system when shooting videos or in live view to keep things focused.
Just like the EOS 100D, the camera has a nine-point AF system and a pentamirror viewfinder that offers around 95% coverage of the scene. One expected change, however, is the addition of wireless connectivity, which comprises Wi-Fi and NFC, together with low-energy Bluetooth to ensure the camera can stay partnered up with a smartphone at all times.
The Canon EOS 200D is due to arrive in July in both body-only and kit configuration, the latter with the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5. 6 IS STM.
