Blackmagic Design has announced the latest version of DaVinci Resolve. DaVinci Resolve 17. 4 promises massive performance gains on Apple Mac models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. These chips are featured in the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that Apple unveiled earlier this week.
On the new M1 Pro and M1 Max powered notebooks, and any future Mac models that include the same new Apple silicon chips, DaVinci Resolve 17. 4 is up to 5x faster than 17. 3. Thanks to the large speed increase, customers can 'play back, edit and grade 8K projects even faster, and can work with up to 12 streams of 8K footage. ' The new MacBook Pro models also include ProMotion 120Hz, which is now supported in DaVinci Resolve 17. 4. You can also view HDR content on Apple MacBook HDR displays.
DaVinci Resolve 17. 4 includes other performance improvements as well. The new version can decode 12K Blackmagic RAW files over three 3x faster, and H. 265 rendering is about 1. 5x faster. DaVinci's Neural Engine is up to 4x faster for real-time facial recognition, object detection and smart reframing.
Apple's new MacBook Pro models include M1 Pro or M1 Max chips. DaVinci Resolve 17. 4 supports these new chips and promises significant performance gains. The latest version of Resolve also supports the ProMotion 120Hz displays featured in the new notebooks.
Dropbox Replay is supported in the latest version of DaVinci Resolve, as well. Frame accurate colored markers, comments and annotations made in Dropbox Replay are 'almost instantaneously synced' to the timeline in Resolve. You can also quickly set up renders with dedicated Dropbox, and Dropbox Replay presets and uploads are performed automatically in the background.
Concerning subtitles, Resolve 17. 4 automatically resizes backgrounds and cursor placement when creating captions. It also includes auto-population of nested timeline subtitle tracks on the main timeline, speeding up creating captions.
The editing page includes improved functionality of position curves in the timeline. It is now easier to adjust the ease in and out points. DaVinci writes, 'This creates a more custom transition from one point to another when applying zoom or image position adjustments. ' Another speed improvement comes from customers now being able to use DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor to swap between cameras in multicam clips on the edit page. The software includes additional support for asymmetrical trimming.
DaVinci Resolve 17. 4 includes expanded support for automatic color management, which should make project setup simpler. The new update adds support for ACES 1. 3, including gamut suppression, so wide gamut images are displayed more accurately.
A new Resolve FX, custom mixer, has been added. This lets users combine effects and adjust grades with finer control. A new 3D keyer adds the ability to make fine-tuned adjustments to key and matte finesse settings, resulting in cleaner masks with more accurate keys and finer edges. In DaVinci Resolve Studio, the paid version of the app, a new film halation adds the effect of glow or light reflections around high contrast edges, resulting in what DaVinci calls a 'more filmic look. '
Fairlight audio now supports Steinberg VST3 audio plugins, allowing users to access more audio effects. There are new keyboard shortcuts in the Fairlight mixer and new support for multi-channel audio outputs.
When exporting projects, there's a new option to export with YouTube video chapters. There are also improved encode settings for the YouTube render preset, and the option to use hardware-accelerated H. 265 encoding on Windows.
