After decades of making all types of lenses, you would think that Nikon’s engineers would eventually run out of ideas or steam. They’ve made lenses longer, shorter, wider, and pretty much redesigned every popular lens possible (like the new AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.

8E FL ED VR), but niche tilt-shift lenses are always fun to tinker with.

So meet the new PC Nikkor 19mm f/4E ED, which is Nikon’s widest ever tilt-shift lens – an essential tool for architecture photographers and pretty much a cool curiosity for anyone else.

This lens offers 97° of coverage and is a perspective control lens that helps architecture photographers attain straight lines free of distortion, creative photographers get selective focus at a wide angle, and landscape photographers compose panoramic images.

The 19mm f/4E ED is unique amongst all Nikkor PC lenses because the direction of the tilt operation can now be made parallel or perpendicular to shift, and photographers can make adjustments to the focus, depth-of-field, and perspective without needing to lock and unlock the lens.

Three ED and two aspherical elements should help handle distortion and glare, and Nikon are claiming that chromatic aberration and coma should be “virtually eliminated. . . even at the widest aperture settings”. The lens is also coated with Nano Crystal Coat, has an electromagnetic diaphragm for fast auto-exposure control, and has a Flourine coat to prevent dirt, water spots, and smudges on the front element – just like the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2. 8E FL ED.

There are now three Gold Ring Series PC lenses for Nikon; the PC-E 24mm f/3. 5D ED, PC-E Micro 45mm f/2. 8D ED, and PC-E Micro 85mm f/2. 8D, so most useful perspectives are covered.

It will be shipped in November 2016 at the cost of US$3,399. 95.

Note that the lens isn’t compatible with every Nikon body. Check out more information below, which we’ve taken from their official press release.
