Panasonic could be ready to pull the covers off a new Compact System Camera, rumoured to be a replacement for the Lumix G85. Internet rumour site, Photo Rumours, reported the new camera is likely to be called the G9 and information about the new camera suggests it could sport some impressive specifications.

While it’s always worth taking these rumours with a pinch of salt until the official announcement is made, Photo Rumours cited information that suggests the Lumix G9 will have the same photo quality and functions as Panasonic’s GH-5, which boasts a 20. 3-megapixel Micro Four-Thirds sensor in a weather sealed body with dual memory card slots. Interestingly, more rumours suggest the G9 could have a high resolution mode that shoots and stitches six frames to create one 80-megapixel file - that's large enough to create some huge prints!

Could the new G9 borrow specs from Panasonic's flagship GH5?

Along with the high resolution, speed seems to be key for the G9 too, with reports suggesting the camera will fuse a very high shooting rate with a buffer large enough to capture at least 60 frames at a time, which would prove very welcome to wildlife and sports photographers wishing to capture action sequences.

Additional information suggest the G9 could have a second display on its top plate, much like you'd find on a DSLR design, but videographers won’t welcome the rumours that the G9 won’t be able to match the GH5’s advanced video specifications. The GH5’s ability to shoot 4K up to 60p and Full HD at high frames has seen it become a popular choice in the film-making community.

Rumoured pricing for the G9 is around $1400, which would make it around $500-$600 more affordable than the GH5, should these figures prove accurate. What’s more, it seems photographers won’t have to wait that long to hear an official word or get their hands on the G9 as it’s rumoured the camera will be officially announced in the next few weeks.
