There was a time when we told everyone that we’re getting rid of reviewing small-sensor point and shoot cameras. In fact, nearly everyone did because the smartphone had decimated that market. But perhaps what we all forget is the fact that the camera manufacturers weren’t even trying to understand what people wanted from compact cameras.

In truth, serious compacts were still treated with the respect you pay to your favorite everyday essentials. And though initial reviews of the Panasonic ZS99 seem to be very unenthusiastic about this camera, I can tell you with confidence that having this much power in my pocket again is truly a reminder of not realizing just how good we had it in the 2010s. .
