I drove 10000km through the Balkans looking for Spomeniks. In the language of the former Yugoslavia this word means monument, or memorial. They commemorate the Second World War and were mainly built in the 1960s/70s during Tito’s regime, who furthermore, inaugurated a certain number of them himself.
It's amazing how places often seem to retain a certain mood or character long after they've been deserted. This is most likely what draws urban explorers to such location, be it an eerie crumbling hospital or a forgotten ghost town.
