RED teases new Komodo system with what appears to be an RF lens mount

Note the four pins on the raised section of the connection point. Canon's EF mount has just three pins there while its new RF mount features four pins in what appears to be an identical arrangement.

During its recent announcement regarding the development of its new Hydrogen 2 camera, RED Founder Jim Jannard mentioned Komodo, a name that didn’t ring any bells until recently, when RED President Jarred Land made an interesting post on the RED USER forums to explain not what Komodo is, but what it isn’t.

In the forum post Land narrows down what Komodo is by laying out what it isn't. 'I told everyone that I wouldn’t reveal Komodo until it was ready,' he said in the post. 'There [is] still is a bunch of time before the first batch starts shipping towards the end of the year and everything can and probably will change [. . . ] But in the spirit of discovery [. . . ] perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not:'

It is not DSMC3

It is not a replacement for DSMC2

It is not 8k VV

It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor

It does not have an HDMI port

It does not use proprietary media

It is not a "module"

It is not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen.

It has no XLR ports

It does not have a fixed lens

It’s body does not weight more than 2 pounds.

It’s not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.

He follows up the above list with the image at the top of this article. While the image doesn’t give much away, a sharp-eyed Newsshooter reader noticed the mount appears to feature the same pin configuration that’s found on Canon’s RF lens mount.

RED has heavily relied on the EF mount for its cameras in the past, so it’s not a stretch to assume it’s interested in Canons new, more versatile mount as well. Sure, some of the appeal of Canon’s EF mount was the ubiquity of lenses made for it, a benefit that doesn’t apply to the RF mount, but Canon offers a solid range of first-party EF-RF adapters and the shorter flange focal distance (20mm) makes it possible to adapter nearly any lens to the system.

In addition to the lead image showing off the mount and pin arrangement, Land also shared the above Instagram post, which shows a microphone port, audio monitoring port and an LED with ‘CFast’ written next to it. It’s unknown whether the ‘CFast’ label in the image refers to a standalone module or potentially a dual-media module that could add some redundancy and record to both Mini-Mag and CFast simultaneously, but it’ll be a welcomed addition either way.

Land wrapped up the forum post saying ‘since Komodo is alive and breathing and you will probably see it pop up over the next few weeks and months in the hands of some very talented people banging on it to try and break it. ’

We might know what Komodo isn’t, but that still leaves plenty of room for what it is. It appears we’ll be finding out soon enough though.
