Sony Announces SF-G: The Fastest SD Card In The World!

Lock and load digital camera shooters! Sony is releasing the SF-G, the fastest SD card on the planet. The SF-G series will offer read and write speeds up to a ridiculoso 399MB/S and 299MB/s respectively.

The knock on effect of this is not just that file transfers to editing suites will be faster. This speed boost will also mean that cameras supporting UHS-II will be able to handle longer high-speed continuous burst modes.

Sony states that they crafted the SF-G specifically for digital photographers. Romain Rousseau, European Product Marketing Manager for Sony explained in a statement:

“As the continuous shooting of higher-resolution images and adoption of 4K video with DSLR and mirrorless camera increases, the inherent need for larger, faster and more reliable cards becomes apparent. Thanks to the SF-G series, we continue to show our commitment to providing a full range of extremely high performance media devices to professional photographers and enthusiasts, maximising their camera performances. ”

What’s an extra cherry on top of this staggering improvement in usability, is that the SF-G will also work hand in glove with Sony’s free File Rescue software. Even if an image or video gets deleted by accident, the tool will work with the SD card to recover files, including RAW stills and 4K XAVC-S footage. Add that with the fact that this thing boasts water-proofing and anti-static protection, and you’re going to have to work very hard to lose anything you shoot.

Alongside the SF-G SD Card, Sony is of course not missing the chance to launch a new card reader to go with it. The MRW-S1, pitched (unsurprisingly) as the fastest card reader for the new SF-G series. Built with a USB 3. 1 Gen. 1 Superspeed USB port, it should move files even faster to PC-based editing rigs than an SD card slot.

Despite its super speed, the SF-G will just be available in the standard storage size range, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Prices are unavailable at the moment but Sony states they will be on the market soon, with the cards themselves retailing in March 2017, followed by the MRW-S1 in April.
