If you’re a photography nerd and you haven’t visited ExploreCams, you’re really missing out. The site is a vast repository of camera information and statistics, collected in one simple and easy to use location.

The site was launched earlier this year, and made waves online when it published a comprehensive infographic which analysed over seven million photos to determine the world’s most popular cameras, lenses and combinations thereof.

ExploreCams works by scrubbing EXIF data public photo-sharing sites to determine the most popular cameras, picture settings and lenses. The site's newest update allows users to dive even deeper into different camera and lens combinations, adds direct links to sample images from each lens, and breaks down the most popular lenses for each camera in their database.

I’m a Sony a6300 user, and within a few clicks I was able to see that the most popular lens used with the a6300 body is not the kit lens, but the Sony E 16-70mm f/4 Zeiss Vario-Tessar (used by 20. 3% of users), followed by the kit lens, the E PZ 16-50mm f/3. 5-5. 6 OSS, used by 13. 1% of users.

It’s also possible to dive into image samples for a specific body and lens, as well as view the most popular shutter speed settings, ISO settings and apertures for a lens, a camera or a combination thereof.

Although the site is obviously limited in its scope, only being able to obtain details from photos that have been shared publicly online on Flickr, 500px and Pixabay, it’s still a fascinating tool to play around with. For potential buyers, it also provides easy access to sample images and crowdsourced recommendations of the top lenses for use with each camera. You can find the sites list of the 50 most popular cameras in ExploreCams’ database here.
