We understand that luxury goods hold a pretty unique place in the market, which is why they keep getting made – but photography fans should know by now to avoid these garish releases by Leica. Today they’ve announced the Leica TL, which is an improved version of the Leica T that came out in 2014.
The Leica TL uses a 16MP APS-C sensor like its predecessor, but Leica are claiming the TL will have better autofocus, especially in AF-C. It still won’t have an EVF, and instead will have a 3. 7” touchscreen.
On the specs side there’s not much to be impressed by, and having a 16MP sensor in 2016 isn’t very competitive for APS-C. There’s no 4K as well, and the camera has 5fps continuous shooting, DNG Raw, and an ISO range of 100 to 12,500. The internal memory has been increased from 16GB to 32GB, but who needs that? Especially since the TL has an SD card slot.
The exterior is pretty much unchanged, except there’s a new Titanium colour option. There’s also a built-in pop-up flash, and an app that allows people to use live view from a mobile device. Altogether these changes seem completely arbitrary, and even from the specs list there seems to be nothing worthwhile from the TL.
At the moment the TL system has a total of 6 lenses: 3 primes and 3 zooms. While users can also use the R-Adapter L to use legacy Leica R-lenses, every single one of these Leica lenses is, as we know, extortionately expensive.
The shiny new TL will be available in November for US$1,695, but currently there are dozens of other mirrorless models that offer far more for far less.
