This Is How Well the Sony A99 II Can See in The Dark

By now it should be of no surprise to anyone that Sony’s new sensors are incredible at high ISOs. The a7S II has set the standard extremely high in terms of what handheld consumer cameras can achieve, and while the a7R II wasn’t geared as much towards this aspect, the A99 II essentially combines the two cameras into one larger package.

YouTuber Bramans recently did a test to show how much can be revealed just by raising the ISO of the A99 II in a dark room lit only by two candles.

He gradually increases the ISO until the whole room is lit, and even then the noise is impressively low.

Bramans used the Carl Zeiss 135mm f/1. 8 prime and presumably shot wide open, showing the immense potential of any fast prime with a camera this powerful.

The camera doesn’t require much tinkering out of the box, and the videographer was pretty much using it without selecting any particular features. The whole clip was shot at 1080p without S Log or any post-production. He used a “flimsy” tripod, and the 5-axis stabiliser helped when he was changing the ISO.

It’s already an extraordinary technological accomplishment for Sony to make such sensitive sensors, and it probably won’t be long until companies manage to make even ISO 4 million clean and useable.
