The Olympus E-M1 MkII may not be everybody’s first pick for making production-quality videos, but the plucky Micro Four-Thirds mirrorless did a great job for up-and-coming pop ground, The RPMs. The band just released their latest track, Your Ghost, and paired up with Olympus to not only shoot all the footage with an OM-D E-M1 MkII but also to make a special behind the scenes video about the adventure, which can be seen here.
When you take a look at the specifications sheet, the E-M1 MkII is actually pretty impressive, boasting ultra high-quality 4K video capture at 24fps and 5-axis image stabilisation. Also, the body is weather sealed, lenses are reasonably priced, the LCD is fully articulated and there are ports for headphones and an external mic. What’s more, the E-M1 MkII can save files in either MOV or H. 264 formats and features dual SD cards.
However, The RPMs aren’t the only artists to make their music videos using an everyday camera instead of a megabucks machine like an Arri or Red. Here’s four other videos we tracked down…
Beyonce - 7/11
The Queen of pop recorded the music video for her track 7/11 using nothing more than a tripod and a GoPro action camera. The track has been watched more than 36 million times and you can see it here.
Robert Kock - Dark Waves
This swirling dance track was captured using just an iPhone 6 Plus, yet features amazing underwater sequences and epic cinematography. Watch the inspiring footage here.
Sunfreakz - Truth Be Told
This intense track was shot mostly on a Nikon D500, except for a couple of clips where a GoPro was used. Featuring car tracking scenes through tunnels and impressive city timelapses, this clip is well worth a watch.
Calloway - Streets
Not to be outdone in the battle of the Micro Four-Thirds cameras, the Panasonic GH5 makes an appearance in our list, too. Streets, by Calloway, was shot entirely on the GH5 and the video features some cool looking sequences, obviously benefitting from the high-quality footage that can be filmed in 4K at 60fps. Watch the video here.
