Drones are magnificent tools that have changed photography forever. We’ve seen drones used to create exciting imagery, spectacular video content and drones have even been used for search and rescue purposes to save lives.

But now drones have been used to break a world record after 1,374 drones were used in an event over the city of Xi'an in China, with the drones dancing in unison over the city’s historic walls.

The event, organised by EHang and supported by FeiyuTech, saw the drones light up as darkness fell and performed a choreographed maneuver that wowed the crowds and set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘Most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously’, with officials from Guinness present at the event to verify the record.

Rules for the event stated that all the drones had to be in the air simultaneously for more than one minute and each drone couldn’t weigh more than 20kg.

The event in Xi’an broke the previous World Record, which was 1,218 and set during the recent Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Shi Zheyuan, CEO of EHANG Egret, commented on the challenges of the event to CGTN ahead of the drones taking off; “Precise localisation is crucial to the show, if one drone went off its route and collapsed with those around it, the show would be ruined. Signal interference from mobile devices of over 100,000 live audience members also adds difficulty to the challenge. "

Reports suggest the incredible drone display may be performed regularly and you can watch a video of the event below.
