Finally, someone has broken the taboo and owned up. It’s something we all suffer from but don’t talk about, but now, we can all fess up. How many of you out there suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)? Mark Ryan Sallee of Michromatic has put together a video on the perils of GAS taking in everyone from those who treat the syndrome like a badge of honour to those who are resigned that this compulsion is a burden all photographers must bear.
GAS, he explains, is an expensive condition that pushes photographers to spend countless sums of cash on the latest piece of kit just because it’s the latest piece of kit. They will only take their new tool out for a spin a couple of times before the next bit of gear arrives - which, in this current climate could be as early as one year on.
Humour aside - this compulsion means that photographers don’t get to grips with their kit before tossing it away for something new. Even the biggest fans of new tech, including ourselves, must see the benefits of using the same piece of kit for months, in fact, years, and honing your skills as a result. The camera you already have is good enough and, if you are not getting the results, often or not what really really needs polish is your own technique, says Sallee.
Still, whilst we’re practising, there’s no harm in looking at what’s coming out soon right?
