Watch the World’s First Pizza Delivered by Drone

Domino’s Pizza recently partnered up with delivery startup Flirtey to fly a fresh serving of pizza to a hungry couple in New Zealand via drone shipment. The flying pizzas were carried roughly 20 miles from Auckland to Whangaparaoa by drone and reached its destination in less than 5 minutes.

The delivery was livestreamed to the Domino’s Pizza Facebook page which led some to hijack to momentous occasion with their thoughts on cold pizzas, thieving neighbours, and hungry dogs.

Domino's Group CEO and Managing Director, Don Meij said that the drone partnership was a success and will be an essential component to pizza deliveries in the future. "They can avoid traffic congestion and traffic lights, and safely reduce the delivery time and distance by travelling directly to customers' homes. This is the future. "

The drones were created from scratch by Flirtey using carbon fibre, aluminium, 3d printed parts, and a tether to safely drop the delivery without having to land to aircraft. The UAV is also designed to return to base or land in one of a number of safe locations in the event of low battery or a loss of GPS signal.

However, it’s not all good news because the laws regarding drone use in urban areas prohibits flight without a proper permit. In addition, drones simply cannot account for the avoidance of foreign objects in the sky and in the event of a technical glitch pedestrians may find themselves with a serious head injury. But if everything goes according to plan, we expect the Domino’s Pizza drone camera will pick up some unexpectedly wacky footage to rival those zany Russian dashcam videos.
