Talk about making a splash! The winners from Scuba Diving magazine’s annual photo contest have been announced and they will make you want to rush out and charge a underwater housing to your credit card! Now in its 13th year, the Through Your Lens contest attracted thousands of entries from around the world and Greg Lecoeur took the Grand Prize for his jaw-dropping shot of gannets spearing into the waters off Shetland, near Scotland.

Greg’s reward for claiming the Grand Prize was $1000 and a dream trip to Fiji and he explained more about the image: ‘ I was surrounded by thousand of gannet birds feeding frenzy mackerel fishes. Plunging from between ten and fifteen meters above the water they reach up to one-hundred-kilometers per hour when they hit the surface. To catch their meal, they dive until 15 meters deep'.

Greg Lecoeur's image was captured with a Nikon D7200 with a Tokina 10-17mm lens

Rodney Bursiel took first place in the Wide Angle category for an image of a whale calf breaching off the shores of Fiji. Rodney commented on his image; ‘ I was photographing the mom when this calf came from behind and breached right beside me. It was an experience I will never forget!’

Rodney Bursiel used a Nikon D800 with a Nikon AF FX fisheye-Nikkor 16mm f/2. 8D lens

Taking second place in the Wide Angle category was Marc Henauer’s image of a diver beneath the shallow surf near Long Island in the Bahamas. Marc explained his magical capture; ‘When a wave breaks on a reef, it becomes a beachcomber. The underwater view offers incredible scenery, like a thunderstorm. When we arrived to take pictures of freediving, the sea seemed to have been unleashed. It was very difficult to cross the reef because of the strong waves; we approached and attempted to pass to the other side underwater. ”

Rounding out the Wide Angle category was Jens Troeger's jaw-dropping frame of a pack of sea lions, captured off the coast of British Columbia in Canada. Jens claimed the image was one of his favourites of the day and it seemed to stike a chord with the judges too.

Jens' busy frame was captured with a Canon EOS 7D and a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM lens

In the category for images captured with compact cameras, Kevin Richter took first prize for this amazing image of a coconut octopus on the sea floor. Kevin explained the image was taken at a depth of 13ft below his boat and that he used a single snooted strobe to light his subject.

Keving Richter used a Canon PowerShot G7X to capture his winning image

Second place in the compact cameras category went to Enrico Somogyi for an ethereal photo of a jellyfish of the coast Mallorca. Amazingly, Enrico captured this image using the macro mode of his Olympus Tough camera!

Enrico used a Olympus Tough TG-4 compact, which is waterproof!

Raoul Caprez took the first place honour in the Macro photography category. He initially was ready to shoot a sea turtle but then noticed the smaller cleaner fish which made for a startling change of scale between the two subjects.

Taking second place in the Macro category was Eduardo Acevedo, who captured an impressive image of a ribbon eel in the waters of Lembeh Strait near Indonesia. Eduardo explained that the eels usually remain hidden in their small holes or caves, timidly inching their heads outside. Also, he revealed these subjects have two color combinations: blue and yellow or black and yellow.

Eduardo's image was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, paired with a Canon EF 100mm f/2 macro lens
