Astronaut Forgets SD Card during Spacewalk

Come on, admit it; we’ve all made the mistake of forgetting to check there’s an SD card in the camera sometime during our photography journey. However, perhaps not many of us have made this blunder while conducting a spacewalk in zero gravity.

This was the fate that befell flight engineer Drew Feustel while conducting a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). Video captured an exchange between Drew and Houston HQ where he tries to use the GoPro camera, only to discover there is no SD card inside meaning no footage could be recorded.

The GoPro in the video sports some interesting protection to shield it from the freezing temperatures of outer space but, without a SD card, there’s nothing Feustel can do to capture video. The astronaut can be forgiven for the photo faux pas as he probably had his mind on the maintenance tasks he was trying to complete while floating in zero gravity.

Feustel discovered there was no SD card in the GoPro while on a spacewalk.

The GoPro isn’t the only item of photographic gear to have recently left the Earth’s atmosphere. Last year NASA put in a massive order of 53 Nikon D5 DSLRs and Nikon commented at the time that the cameras would be supplied totally unmodified. Nikon has enjoyed a close relationship with NASA that started back in 1971 - you can read a timeline of big moments between the two, here.

So, if this celestial mishap proves anything, it goes to show that everybody makes a photo mistakes sometimes! You can watch a video of the moment Feustel talks to Houston HQ about the GoPro below. . .

Don't forget the SD card!
