It’s been a busy day for Canon, as the company released no less than four new lenses, along with a niche lens flash for macro shooters. Let’s talk about the 85mm f/1. 4 L first, which is the first Canon EF 85mm lens to feature image stabilization, providing up to four stops of shake correction to combat shake.
85mm lenses are perfect for portraiture and this new optic features one large diameter, high-precision molded glass aspherical lens that features an ASC coating. Boasting a circular aperture design with a 9-blade iris, this lens is sure to produce some insane bokeh when it is released in November, with a price-tag of around $1600.
The big headlines though are for Canon’s three new tilt/shift lenses. These optics are specialised and sought after because they allow more control over perspective through the tilt function and more control over depth-of-field through the shift function. They’re especially useful for architecture photography as the lenses can combat problems such as converging verticals. The new lenses are the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2. 8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2. 8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens, offering Canon shooters tilt/shift capability at a variation of focal lengths.
The new tilt/shift lenses include a number of new features over Canon’s previous T/S models including ‘larger tilt, shift-and-lock knobs, a lock-release button and a new tilt-locking mechanism to lock the lens in the zero-tilt position to help prevent unintended tilting to increase more precise shooting capabilities. ’ It seems all three lenses have the same price-tag (around $2199) and are expected to ship in November.
Lastly from Canon comes the release of Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash - a specialised twin flash unit that attaches to a macro lens to fill-in shadows on close up subjects. Canon say the detachable macro twin lites can be rotated up to 60 degrees, and features a maximum guide number of 85. 3 ft (26 m). Also scheduled for a November release date, the Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash should cost around $990.
