Has Sony just launched the Ultimate Travel Camera?

With summer well and truly here, Sony has picked the perfect time to launch what could well be the ultimate vacation camera. The RX100 VI is a tiny compact with a big focal range and bursting with impressive features.

Here’s nine things you need to know about this mind-blowing camera…

1 - It’s got an amazing focal length:

Okay, let’s cut to the chase and talk about the Cyber-shot RX100 VI’s standout feature, which has to be the incredible 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) focal range - up from 24-70mm on the predecessor. The f/2. 8-4. 5 zoom lens design features two ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical glass elements and eight aspherical lens elements including four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses. This range covers off pretty much everything you’d need for photo situations on holidays, from wide-angle landscape views to more telezoom close up detail shots. That’s a massive focal range from a camera that really does fit in your pocket.

2 - There’s an impressive autofocus system, too!:

Sony say the RX100 VI has the world’s fastest autofocus in its class and can lock on to subjects in just 0. 03seconds. The hybrid AF system uses 315 focal plane phase-detection AF points, which cover around 65% of the frame.

The focal length has increased to a whopping 24-200mm.

3 - Keep it steady:

With such a long focal length, photographers could worry about camera shake, particularly when using the longest, 200mm range of the lens. However, the Sony RX100 VI boasts built-in Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) system, which is equivalent to a 4. 0-stop faster shutter speed. This stabilisation will also help when photographers are shooting in low light situations and can’t support the camera with a tripod or other stabiliser.

4 - There’s plenty of resolution:

Despite its small size, the RX100 VI features an advanced sensor that generates plenty of resolution. In fact, the camera is fitted with a 1. 0-type stacked 20. 1 MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip and upgraded BIONZ X image processor. This combination should be enough for users to make prints up to A3 in size.

There's 20-megapixels of resolution.

5 - It’s seriously fast:

Like the RX100 V it replaces, the VI can shoot up to 24 fps with full AF/AE tracking and has a buffer that allows it to shoot up to 233 images in one go. Talking of speed, the RX100 VI also features a high-speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second). This design reduces the “rolling shutter” that can be experienced with fast moving subjects.

6 - It’s good for movies:

Vloggers will be rubbing their hands together as the RX100 VI contains some impressive video specifications. Along with shooting 4K video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning, there’s also a 4KHDR mode plus - the first time this feature has appeared in a Cyber-shot camera. The RX100 VI will let videographers get creative too, along with including S-Log3/S-Gamut profiles, it can capture super slow motion video at up to 1000 frames per second.

The touch-sensitive LCD flips up and is touch-sensitive - good for filming 4K movies.

7 - The LCD is touch-sensitive:

Unlike previous versions of the RX100, the VI has a touch-sensitive screen, meaning users can tap focus to specify where they wish the camera to focus. What’s more, users can even trigger the shutter by pressing the screen and the LCD can flip up 180-degrees, making it useful for not only selfies, but for filming Vlogs too.

The RX100 VI can shoot up to 24 frames per second in burst mode.

8 - There’s plenty more features:

Along with a retractable EVF, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the RX100 VI also includes a ‘Monitor Auto Off’ function that boosts max number of still images by up to 30%. Photographers won’t have to wait that long to get their hands on the RX100 VI as it’s expected to start shipping in July.

9 - We know the price-tag:

Give the amount of cool features on the RX100 VI, the price-tag Sony has revealed appears reasonable. Photographers in Europe will pay around 1300 Euros and you can watch a short film about the RX100 VI’s features below.
