America is a huge country with vast landscapes that are perfect for photographers to explore. But the good old US-of-A is also home to some amazingly photogenic cities too and National Geographic Traveller has compiled a ‘hot-list’ of 29 urban areas you should visit in 2018.
To create the list Nat Geo Traveller looked at a number of variables, including how much green space the city has, right through to more current trends of measurement, such as how many times the city has appeared as a hash-tag on Instagram. Of course, there always has to be an element of personal taste when measuring what makes a ‘must-see’ city, but as photographers, it’s always great to see inspirational images of urban locations.
So, we’re gonna serve up 29 photos of cities, captured across the US, from sea to shining sea. These images are sure to give you wanderlust and, if you are already interested in cityscape photography, maybe also give you some photo ideas for when you next head to the big lights with your camera.
Plus, the images show how professional photographers use a variety of techniques to make the most from the city locations. These include using features such as arches as natural frames, or slowing down a fast-flowing river with a ND filter to create interest. Other techniques include using a long shutter speed to add energetic traffic-trails to nighttime city scenes or hitting the sidewalks and bringing a street photography style to the image by introducing people to the frame. Let’s take a look….
