Sony E mount users have yet another premium lens to salivate over today after Zeiss officially announced the Batis 135mm f/2. 8. The full framer will house 14 elements in 11 groups within an all-metal enclosure, giving the lens a premium feel to go along with its hefty price tag.

Its Apo Sonnar optical design includes a signature OLED display with distance and depth of field readouts.

Like the recent 85mm, the lens will also feature AF, weather sealing and optical image stabilisation. Although the lens will cost US$1,999 when it becomes available in May, Zeiss are confident that this powerhouse lens will justify the extra expense.

“We have put a lot of effort into the optical design and into correcting our lenses,” says Zeiss product manager Michael Pollmann. “For example, we are experimenting with special types of glass in order to rule out as many kinds of image errors as possible. We have thus been able to ensure corrected chromatic aberration in the Zeiss Batis 2. 8/135 so that we have virtually no image errors. ”

However, some netizens have already expressed their incredulity over the price of Zeiss’ latest offering. “I love Zeiss, all my lenses but one are Zeiss, but that price is crazy,” wrote one Reddit user.

Based on the sample images published by Zeiss on Flickr, the lens is extremely sharp, with a pleasing bokeh, as seen below. However, it remains to be seen if that will be enough to convince Sony shooters to part with so much cash.
