Leica has helped Christmas come early for photographers who love mirrorless cameras that fuse high image quality with classic vintage styling, as the brand has just released its latest model - the Leica CL.
Leica’s newest camera sits alongside the brand’s other APS-C mirrorless, the TL, but there are a number of differences between the two models.
Whilst the TL makes use of a touchscreen interface to access options and features, the CL adds buttons and a D-pad – plus, it has an overall more retro design to the lightweight body (403g with battery). What's more, the CL features an LCD on its top-plate, so users can quickly view settings/mode information. Photographers can use the 2. 36 million pixel electronic viewfinder or the LCD to compose and review images.
The CL uses Leica’s Maestro II image processor unit and offers a 49-point autofocus system. The CL can use all the lenses from the TL optic range, and benefits from built-in Wi-Fi, which can be used with the Leica CL App for iOS or Android to transfer images to a smart device and to use your phone as an additional viewfinder.
Along with features for stills, Leica’s newest mirrorless also has specs that may turn the heads of videographers, too. The CL can capture ultra high-quality 4K footage at 30p or Full HD at up to 60p, with video recorded to a single SD card slot.
The CL creates images with a maximum file size of 6000x4000 pixels and has an ISO range of 100-50000. The CL is fairly speedy too, with a burst rate of up to 10 frames per second and a top shutter speed of 1/8000sec (mechanical shutter) or 1/25000 with the electronic shutter.
Photographers looking to pick up the Leica CL don’t have long to wait, with the vintage-style mirrorless shipping by the end of November. US photographers will have to pay $2,795, while no price has been released for UK or European photographers. You can watch a video about the CL here.
