Big megapixel cameras may cost more than regular models, but this is because they deliver so much more resolution. Professional photographers need big resolution to not only create big prints (think billboard ads), but also to offer more tolerance for heavy cropping in processing software such as Photoshop or Lightroom.

Fuji’s GFX is one of the newest big megapixel monsters on the market and is the first medium format mirrorless camera to break the 100-megapixel barrier - in fact the camera actually serves up 102-megapixels. The measures back illuminated sensor around 55mm (diagonal length) and is about 1. 7 times larger than a 35mm full frame sensor. The sensor also features phase detection pixels, which is a first for a sensor larger than the 35mm full frame format and doubles the performance speed of the GFX1000’s autofocus system.

It’s hard to believe that Canon’s 5DS and 5DS R cameras were launched back in 2015, but they are still the highest resolution full-frame DSLR cameras on the market and are now exceptionally good value for photographers who don’t want to step up to medium format, but still need big resolution. Serving up 51-megapixels from the full-frame CMOS sensor, the Canon 5DS R offers a 61-point autofocus system, with 41 of the points being the more sensitive cross type design. There’s also a decent burst rate of 5 Frames Per Second (FPS) and image or Full HD video can be composed or reviewed using the large 3. 2-inch fixed LCD.

Sony’s highest-megapixel camera is the acclaimed a7RIII, which serves up 42-megapixels from the full-frame mirrorless Exmor R sensor.
