This week Nikon released their reports for the first half of their financial year, showing that while sales were down overall, profits increased by a remarkable 54% and their operating income rose 23.

8%.

Basically, despite their imminent restructuring and planned layoff of employees, Nikon remain in a strong position for the coming years. The D5 and D500 were extremely well received by both consumers and professionals, and they are strong contenders for being the best cameras in their class for 2016.

With the D5600, which succeeds Nikon’s D5500 from last year, Nikon is following up with their general strategy to refresh all their cameras with improved social connectivity. This means that it will have SnapBridge, which works across Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to provide a seamless connection to your smartphone.

In general the camera has been downsized, although unfortunately at the moment Nikon hasn’t specified by how much. Nonetheless, the camera still has a 24MP APS-C sensor – which both the D5500 and D5300 had. Just like how the D5500 was smaller and faster than the D5300, expect the D5600 to be the same; it will have the EXPEED 4 processor, and the sensor will remain without an anti-aliasing filter. Like the D5500, it will have a native ISO of 100-25,600.

The D5600 will have an improved Vari-angle LCD monitor that can flip out and rotate, allowing photographers to shoot from nearly any angle. The touch-screen operation has also been improved from its predecessor, and there’s now a crop function so that photographers can check the sharpness of their images during playback zoom. It also has the D7200’s time-lapse function, with an automated exposure control that should create a more subtle shift during extended exposures. Lastly, it borrows from the D500 and D5 with a frame advance bar that allows for quick scrolling through images during playback.

Interestingly the D5600 hasn’t been announced for the US market yet, and no information has been provided about the price or shipping date.
