Using spare parts, a little bit of math, and a 3D printer; experimental photographer Mathieu Stern has created a cheap 135mm f1. 8 FE lens alternative for the Sony a7 camera. Using a monocle lens Stern was able to calculate the correct distance to bring his 135mm f1.
8 lens monocle lens to life in a prototype cardboard form. After cracking the formula, he reached out to Arnault Coulet, CEO of 3D printing agency FABULOUS, to design and print the plastic lens parts required.
Stern’s latest 3D printed lens is the latest experiment in his ongoing Weird Lens Challenge web series, where he acquires old and niche lenses and adapts them for a variety of uses. He says that the final product only uses a single glass element on the front and the entire lens can be mounted directly onto the Sony a7. But even more miraculous are the fantastic images Stern was able to capture with it when he travelled to Le Mont St Michel, France.
