In today’s world of photography, it can be hard to find a new view. Luckily for Sony, they managed just that by sending an A7S II all the way out of orbit, to the International Space Station. Sony released some amazing 4K footage of the A7S II, the first commercial camera to be mounted outside the ISS, after it was carried into space by the KOUNOTORI cargo transporter.

It seems the A7S II is the preferred camera of JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency - Japan’s version of NASA) after the A7S II was selected for the new exterior platform on the ISS's Japanese Experiment Module known as "KIBO".

The camera was launched into space back in December last year

In a press release from Sony, it stated that as a result of various tests conducted by JAXA, it was confirmed that the A7S II ‘possesses the durability and reliability to withstand the unique and unforgiving environment of outer space, including high vacuum, cosmic radiation, and abrupt temperature fluctuations. ’

The project is ongoing, so expect more awesome videos soon!

One of the key reason the A7S II was chosen was its performance during low light - the camera features an ISO range of up to 409600 and internal 4K movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning.

All we know is that it certainly can produce some jaw-dropping videos that will help you appreciate the scale and wonder of this little rock we call home, which can be seen here. The camera mounted to the ISS is 400km above the earth and orbits the planet once every 90 minutes. Enjoy the ‘out of this world’ footage!
