Student Wins Nat Geo Prize With iPhone 6S Shot

A graduate student from Hong Kong has bagged a top prize from National Geographic for his spontaneous shot taken on an iPhone 6S. Kira Waison Lee is a student of Japanese studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and has been practicing photography for a number of years.

His image, depicting a girl reflected in rainwater, was taken in Hong Kong’s Kwun Tong district. Lee hopes that his image, entitled ‘Girl Who Travels Through Time And Space’, can evoke a “spiritual aura” for viewers.

Lee was asked by an interviewer if he wants to pursue photography as a career. He replied that it wasn’t likely to be a sustainable profession, although he is sure to continue photography as a hobby. The prize was awarded as part of National Geographic’s International Photo Contest 2016.

He will collect his prize at a formal awards ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan on 26 November.
