Fuji has been offering photographers a good choice of Instax cameras for a while now, but at the Photokina Show in Germany, the brand served up a real first thanks to the new SQ20. Fuji are calling the SQ20 a ‘hybrid camera’ and it manages to do three jobs instead of one.
First up, photographers can choose to capture an image (which is shot in 1:1 aspect ratio) onto Instax film or onto one of the brand’s cool double-sided stickers so you can cover your walls in your photos.
But what happens if you’ve run out of film? Well don’t worry because the SQ20 will also take a JPEG image, and save it to either internal memory or a Micro SD card. Shots can be lined up using the 2. 7-inch color LCD monitor which has 230k dot resolution. Okay, so the image resolution isn’t huge at 1920x1920 pixels, but this isn’t a camera you’ll be using to shoot billboard ads.
And if you still haven’t lined up the perfect moment, you can switch to the SQ20’s ‘Motion Mode’, where users can take a video of up to 15 seconds and choose the best moment of a moving subject to print. What’s more, a ‘Time Shift Collage’ function lets photographers shoot four images at one time with a time difference by pushing a single button. The time difference between shots can be customised and adjusted by 0. 2 seconds up to 2. 0 seconds.
Obviously targeted at the ‘fun’ end of the market, the SQ20 also allows for a number of quirky filters to be added to stills or video. The SQ20 includes a double exposure mode where users can superimpose two images on a single film, plus a Bulb exposure mode that can capture long exposures at night along with images like light trails.
It takes around 12 seconds to make a print and the SQ20, which weighs 390g, is powered by a built-in battery that’s recharged via a Micro USB-B connection. Available in two colour designs (matte black and glossy beige), the SQ20 will be available from October, but no pricing information has been released.
