Give somebody a pen and paper, then ask them to draw an iconic film camera. The chances are they’ll probably sketch out the unmistakable shape of the Rolleiflex - the iconic twin-lens box camera with the look-down viewfinder.

Well, thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that has already smashed its initial funding goal, the Rolleiflex is on its way back, this time as an instant film camera. While the first Rolleiflex came out in 1927, the 2018 version has some refined features, including an aperture range of f/5. 6 to f/22, an anti-glare coating for that iconic lookdown viewfinder and a magnifier to take a closer look at your subject.

The new design stays true to the twin lens styling.

The new Rolleiflex will also include some more creative features, such as a multiple exposure mode to layer subjects by exposing a frame as many times as you like and a long exposure mode to keep the shutter open and capture motion in the image - perfect for traffic trails or for turning static clouds into streaks.

The Rolleiflex will be able to use Fujifilm Instax Mini film.

The new model will be 30% slimmer than traditional twin lens cameras with simplified knobs and buttons and the camera will be compatible with Fujifilm Instax Mini film. The twin lens system, which has a focal length of 61mm, focuses as close as 48cm and there’s also a built-in electric flash with automatic light emission control.

Yep, that's a damn stylish camera.

There’s even an exposure compensation feature to give you more control over the exposure levels in your image and the new Rolleiflex will weigh just 535g. The camera is powered by three AA batteries and has a maximum shutter speed of 1/500sec. As the Kickstarter process is still ongoing, there’s no firm release date at present, but we’ll update you as soon as one is released.

The new Rolleiflex features a built-in flash.
