It was years ago that photographers started to move away from using UV filters. Instead, they just used their lens hoods or lens caps instead. That's what most photographers do today. But in the past few years, the lens hood has become quite problematic at least when it comes to sizing.

D, CPL, and a UV filter. Better yet, they're magnetic. Magnetic filters have had varying degrees of build quality over the years. But most of all, they're quick and easy to use. It goes without saying that lots of folks love convenience.
Back in the analog days when everyone shot film, it was common for photographers to slap UV filters onto their lenses to help reduce haze in their images.
