While compiling a list of potential photographers for an upcoming feature in recognition and celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, one issue that became readily apparent was how little representation Asian Pacific Americans had within our industry.
Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax/Ricoh, and Sony are all based in Japan. (Sigma and Tamron also belong on that list if you're factoring in third party lens makers. ) Hasselblad, Leica, and Phase One are the only notable exceptions, all with European roots. Some would even argue that since their acquisition by Chinese drone maker DJI, Hasselblad is now technically a Chinese company. Considering much of today's photography industry bare Asian roots, the amount of Asian Pacific American photographers that receive any recognition at all seems downright disproportionate. Why aren't there more prominent Asian Pacific American photographers out there?. thephoblographer.com
