December means it's Christmas time, and Christmas time – whether or not you are religious – has essentially become synonymous with the giving of gifts around the world. So we'll take a look at some of the best cameras to come out in 2016 under US$1,000 just in case you need some inspiration for the holiday season.

5) Pentax K-70

US$650

Pentax may often have a hard time competing against the other players in the market, but that's not because their cameras are lacking. The K-70 offers so much value for the price, and is probably more powerful than any DSLR from Nikon or Canon. Yet due to the fact that there are simply less K-mount users in the world, Pentax has priced this extremely competitively. For US$650 you can get a DSLR with WiFi connection, Pixel Shift, in-body IS, a 24. 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, and weather sealing. What a bargain - that is, if you want to use the K-mount.

4) G85/GX85

US$900/US$600

These two Micro Four Thirds cameras by Panasonic are virtually identical, but do have some key differences. The most prominent difference is in the appearance and handling. The G85 is more like a DSLR, while the GX85 is more like a rangefinder. The LCDs are also not identical, and also the G85 has weather-sealing. Aside from that though, both can capture 4K, 16MP sensors, Dual IS, and are relatively affordable.

3) Canon M5

US$1100

The Canon M5 isn't an answer yet to Sony's A6500/A6300 or Fujifilm's X-Pro2/X-T2, but it's a start. And it's a pretty damn good start. Good resolution and functionality, but great ergonomics make this an ideal camera for intermediate-to-beginner photographers who want to step up from the smartphone. See our review here.

2) RX100V

US$1000

We haven’t done a full review of the RX100V yet, but in the period of time that we’ve had it in the office our entire team has been very impressed with the latest premium compact by Sony. It's a great secondary camera for 4K clips and also slow motion recording, but most importantly of all, the autofocus is simply top of its class for a premium compact. This can easily be used as a vlogging camera.

1) A6300

US$1000

. . . And in first place we have the A6300. This APS-C mirrorless camera may have its problems but it’s also undoubtedly more of a camera than most people will need. It’s immensely powerful, and is just so chock full of features for the price that very few photographers will find it lacking in either speed or resolution. With a blazingly fast autofocus, a 24MP sensor, and the ability to shoot in 4K, what more can someone ask for in a camera of this price?

This is great for almost every type of photography, and due to its pocketability, it's actually something that most people will be willing to use as often as possible.
