5 Ways to Record Amazing Video Footage on a Smartphone

Most smartphones come equipped with a video camera that is capable of recording decent footage. On your first few attempts to record videos on a smartphone however you may not be all that satisfied with the results, and may find the quality to be less than what you expect.

In most cases the problem isn’t in the camera on the smartphone, but rather the technique and approach that is used. All that it takes is a few simple tips and you will be able to record some amazing video footage using your smartphone:

Make sure the lighting is good and not in-frame

The one thing that you absolutely must have to record high quality videos on your smartphone is good lighting. Most smartphone cameras have small lenses and sensors, and so they require brightly-lit scenes so that the video doesn’t appear grainy and shadowy. It also helps a lot if the lighting is steady, and doesn’t shift suddenly – as your camera will struggle to cope if it does.

On top of good lighting, you should ensure that the light source itself is not in-frame or it will over-expose your video footage and cause elements in the foreground to lose definition. Try to shoot with the light source behind you, instead of in front of you.

Keep the smartphone (and camera) as steady as possible

Due to the small lenses and sensors on smartphone cameras, any motion can result in a quick loss of focus and cause the images in the video to look blurry and distorted. To avoid that you should try to keep the camera as steady as you can at all times.

Start by holding the smartphone properly – with both hands (one on either side), and your elbows locked near your body. If you still have difficulty keeping the smartphone steady, try using a stand or camera holder of some kind.

Get close instead of zooming

Although most smartphone cameras have a zoom feature, it is normally a digital zoom – which you should try to avoid using. Simply put a digital zoom will lower the image quality and cause it to lose definition.

In a nutshell whenever possible you should get closer to the subject physically with your smartphone camera rather than zooming. It is worth noting that some new smartphones are the exception to this rule – as the newer dual-lens cameras may include an optical zoom that can preserve the image quality.

Increase the frame rate

If you want your videos to look their best, you should try to capture them in the highest possible frame rate that your camera is capable of. Most smartphone cameras nowadays can record at 60 frames per second – which is what you should try to shoot for.

In some cases you may even want to drop the resolution, if doing so allows you to record at a higher frame rate. For example some smartphones may allow you to record UHD videos at 30 frames per second or HD videos at 60 frames per second – and generally you should opt for the latter.

Remember that the audio matters too

One of the main downfalls of smartphone cameras is that they aren’t great at recording audio, and that can cause your video to appear to be of a poor quality. Typically the built-in microphone on smartphones is liable to rustle, crackle and pop due to wind and other background noises.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to fix this, and you can either use an external microphone, or edit and add a new audio track after the fact.

Assuming you take heed of these five ways to record amazing video footage on a smartphone, you should see a significant improvement immediately – and to be honest many of these tips can be used with any HD recorder. As you perfect your technique you’ll notice that the videos you record get better and better, to the point that their quality is beyond reproach.

Fancy is a pocketable smartphone gimbal

Smartphone stabilizers are a great tool for capturing professional-looking video footage on your mobile device and are getting more powerful with every new generation. However, most current models have one thing in common: they are not really pocketable, making them more of a dedicated tool for serious video shooters rather than an everyday item for the average consumer. dpreview.com »
